    Paint the City Green

    When it comes to celebrating Irish culture, Hollywood Beach doesn’t mess around. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself at Hyde Hollywood Beach Resort this March, make sure to check out St. Patrick’s Day festivities all around town....

    Every year, Hollywood Beach prepares for St. Paddy’s Day with a huge downtown parade that begins at Harrison Street and 21st Avenue and makes its way north and east for quite some time before returning. This year, the parade will take place on Sunday, March 15 and will begin at 1:00 pm. Stop by for the dozens of handcrafted floats that will be parading everything Irish. The parade will also feature authentic live performers and overall great vibes.

    On St. Patrick’s Day itself (March 17), make your way downtown for any one of the many Irish pubs that will be celebrating full stop. Grab some pints of Guinness at Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub and Restaurant or try some gourmet food at The Field Irish Pub & Eatery. Many local establishments will be sporting green beer and drink specials. You won’t have to look hard to find the party!

    The 9th Annual Riverwalk Stone Crab & Seafood Festival will take place on Saturday, January 11th in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale in Esplanade Park.     If you find your self in Hollywood, then you’re probably looking for some trendy and off-beat activity. What better event than an art festival? ...

    Take the day to visit the Artisan Market at the Downtown Hollywood Artwalk, opening on November 16th. You’ll be able to experience two blocks full of pop-up art and fun. During this free event, you’ll find some booths with handcrafted products and artisan showcases. As you work your way down the streets, you will encounter some unique vintage and retro boutiques that could have the perfect souvenir or a special gift for someone back home. Aside from exploring all the art, there will be street performances and live entertainment.     Four Festivals To Kick-Off The Fall

    The month of October is filled with fun, especially here in South Florida. Whether you want to see art, explore new cultures, jam out to live music, or indulge iconic food, these four major fall festivals have got it all. ...

    Oktoberfest will be taking place at Park & Ocean inside of Fort Lauderdale’s Hugh Taylor Birch State Park from October 12th - 13th. The park’s open space will be transformed into a German countryside village with rock and roll music, festive decor, and a tented dining pavilion. Purchase your tickets in advance and get ready for the fun! 

    The 8th Annual Brazilian Festival is an amazing journey into Brazil’s art, culture, tradition, and cuisine—taking place at the Pompano Beach Community Park from October 19th - 20th.  Enjoy an outdoor circus, live musical performances, and more! The festival also has a kids zone with an inflatable playground and slides—the perfect setting for family time. 

    The 32nd Las Olas Art Festival is ranked as one of the top 100 art festivals in the nation and continues to be one of the most popular art events in the area. Taking place on Las Olas Boulevard from October 19th - 20th, you will have the chance to meet the creators of the art on display, ask questions about techniques, and learn the sources of their inspirations—all for free!  

    Sip through the night with drink and food specials at designated locations around downtown Fort Lauderdale during the Halloween Bar Crawl on Saturday, October 26th.     Distill your own gin – No bathtub needed, just head over to South Florida Distillers in Fort Lauderdale on any Saturday morning. Create your flavor, then distill, bottle, and label your very own custom gin!

    FATVillage ArtWalk – Recurring monthly on the last Saturday of the month, this is Ft. Lauderdale’s original art walk, and it’s one fabulous evening of art, food, and music. Located in Fort Lauderdale's Flagler Village neighborhood, FATVillage ArtWalk allows you to connect with musicians, painters, sculptors, designers, and creative types of every stripe. Be sure to scope out the open art galleries, local food trucks, and vendor stalls. 

    Go Yellow Green – South Florida’s largest Farmers Market features fresh, organic, and locally grown fruit and produce, freshly-caught fish, herbs, Amish butter, free-range organic meats, dried goods, and specialty items. (Quail eggs or kombucha, anyone?) You’ll also find tons of plant-based body products, gluten and dairy-free treats, spices, coffees, pasta, baked goods, local honey, wine, beer, plants, and more. The Yellow Green Market is open year-round on Saturdays and Sundays.

    Shopping, live entertainment, and the art of downtown Hollywood are all recommended this month by your Sotherly host. First, join us for the Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk on August 17. Always held on the third Saturday of every month, the ArtWalk is full of fun and fabulous activities. Check out the Artisan Market for artist showcases, handmade items, pop-up shops, gourmet eats, vintage items, and boutique goods....

    Learn all about the art and artists of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, and afterward, enjoy a guided and curated Gallery Tour with Evan Snow of Choose 954, and meet the local artists. Impulse Art is the focus for later in the evening, with a live art performance that features a fusion of painting and music. See artist Daniel Pontet paint with his feet, as he is accompanied by the rhythmic drumming of Jeff Lee of Resurrection Drums. Limited on-street metered parking is available, along with parking at various municipal garages. This year’s Downtown Hollywood ArtWalks will continue on the third Saturday of each month through December 23, 2019.

    Tortoises, Snakes, Mangroves, and More

    This July, your Sotherly host is offering several opportunities for fun and educational family-friendly activities at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. The park features a selection of Ranger Led Walks/Tours at various dates and times during the month, and include the Mangrove Habitat Walk, which takes guests past the gopher tortoise habitat and into the mangroves; the Mid-Trail Walk, also leading past the gopher tortoises and into an exploration of the trail’s native and non-native plants; and the Coastal Dune and Historical Homes walk....

    This trail goes past Coastal Dune Lake and the Endangered Beach habitat along the park’s eastern boundary that is home to sea oats, sea turtles, and other protected flora and fauna. One of the park’s most popular events takes place every Friday and Saturday, when a live animal presentation is held. Featured are animals that call the park home, including the Eastern Indigo Snake, Florida Rat Snakes and Corn Snakes, and native turtle species. Walks range between 1-2 miles, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring your own water. Guided walks are free, but donations are always appreciated.

You’ll also see wheel-throwing demos, wearable glass, and the retro collectibles of artist Laurence Gartel, along with his limited-edition prints inspired by WMODA exhibits.

    A Marshmallow Drop, an Earth Day Art Festival, Food Trucks at the ArtsPark are only a few of April’s suggested events by your Sotherly Host. First, join the Easter Bunny at the Boulevard Heights Community Center on April 13 for an egg hunt, the Lil’ Peeps Pageant, and over 30,000 marshmallows dropped from a helicopter. Next, head over to the ArtsPark on April 15 for a food truck, fresh air feast. Bring the family for a picnic, and select from over 20 trucks. And, don’t miss the “Free Our Seas and Beyond Earth Day Environmental Art Festival” on April 20....

    Sponsored by the Surf Rider Foundation of Broward County, the festival will feature Captain the rescued green sea turtle, live musical performances, kid’s activities, eco-friendly vendors, a community art installation, chalk muralist Carrie Bennett, sand sculptor John May, and a variety of high school artists. Also on April 20, be sure to take a stroll along the Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk. Explore pop-up shops, galleries, live music, a mural tour, outdoor markets, restaurants, and impulse art; featuring a live art performance by artist Daniel Pontet, accompanied by musician Jeff Lee on the drums.

    March Features Food, Wine, and the Arts

    This March, your Sotherly host is offering up these terrific suggestions for some of the area’s most interesting and entertaining events. First, feast your eyes on some fabulous fiber art at Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Quilt Expo from March 4-10. In addition to the displays, the Expo will feature workshops, demonstrations, vendors and more. Next, don’t miss the last days of the “Captain is Art” exhibition starring Hollywood’s Own “Captain the Green Sea Turtle.” On display at ArtsPark’s Young Circle Gallery through March 17, this exhibit by artist Maria Isabel Lazo will benefit Sea Turtle education and the MEEC Research Center, the permanent home of Captain....

    Lastly, be sure to come out to Hollywood’s ArtsPark on March 22-24 for the coming of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival. Premiere spirit brands, wineries, and breweries will join over 100 fine local restaurants and their emerging chefs for three days of tastings, cooking demonstrations, live music, and art exhibits. A full day Grand Tasting Event will highlight the festival, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Feeding South Florida.

    This month, your Sotherly host suggests the following activities and events for your consideration. First, join us at Arts Park on Young circle for CanadaFest on February 8-10. Celebrating Canadian culture in South Florida, this music Festival will present a variety of musical groups on the large stage performing pop, country, rock, retro, and more. A dance floor, a video wall, and vendors will add to the fun.  Next, treat your valentine to a very special concert, when Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons perform at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood on February 14-15.  ...

    On February 17, head over to downtown Hollywood for Vintage South Florida. A celebration of history, architecture, entertainment, and family fun, VSF will feature a classic car show, vintage movies, antique and collectibles, a variety of live entertainment, historic exhibits, and dozens of street vendors. A parade at 11:00 a.m. will feature honored veterans of World War II, and there will be an awards ceremony at noon with Mayor Josh Levi honoring historic community leaders.

    January Features Music, Art, and Nature

    This month, your Sotherly host is suggesting three fabulously fun events for your consideration. First, go large and go pink with Flamingo Fest 2019 at Flamingo Gardens on January 19-20. Kitsch it up with Flamingo-inspired arts & craft vendors and Flamingo art by local artists. Art will be exhibited throughout the botanical gardens, but the highlight of the fest will be the Fabulous Flamingo Contest, where guests can vote for their favorite flamingo yard ornaments. You’ll also enjoy cool retro music, great food, and entertainment....

    Next, don’t miss the South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s performance of "Porgy & Bess” Presented by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, George and Ira Gershwin’s beloved folk opera will be brought to the local stage on January 23. Lastly, discover the world outside your door with Ranger-led walks and tours of the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Explore mangrove habitats, exotic plants, the Coastal Dune Lake area, the Maritime Forest habitats, and more.     The holiday season here in Hollywood is the best of both worlds – sunny beaches beckon, and there are seasonal celebrations galore. With that in mind, your Sotherly host suggests the following activities. First, kick off your holidays in style with the Miami City Ballet’s presentation of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker on December 7-8 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. You’ll be dazzled by dancing snowflakes, The Sugarplum Fairy, and many others as they perform this enchanting new production of the beloved Tchaikovsky classic....

    Next, don’t miss the 63rd Annual Candy Cane Parade the evening of December 8. An eagerly-anticipated tradition since the mid-1950s, the parade will include dozens of beautifully-decorated and lighted floats rolling down the Boardwalk, along with additional parade participants, many of whom will be tossing out candy canes and Starlight Mints. Lastly, check out another popular holiday tradition on December 15, when the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade sails along a 12-mile route lined with over a million spectators. This year’s theme is “Best of the ’80s,” so make your hair big, put on your shiniest spandex tights, and join the party on the shore.

    This month, our visitors and guests have a myriad of fun and entertaining events from which to choose, and your Sotherly host has listed three of the best here. First, head over to Gulfstream Park on November 3 for the Day of the Dead 5K Run and Taco, Tequila and Beer Fest 2018. Runners and attendees are encouraged to dress in their best Day of the Dead regalia in honor of this cultural tradition. The festival will feature a Catrina Costume Contest, a Tour of the Altars, live music, and fabulous food and drink....

    Next, join us in saluting our nation’s military on November 11 at the 7th Annual City of Hollywood Veterans Barbecue. This Topeekeegee Yugnee (TY) Park event offers a chance to serve local veterans while enjoying wonderful food, some friendly conversation, and loads of fun. Lastly, see performances of living chess games, knights, and jesters during the Camelot Days Medieval Festival in TY Park on the weekends of November 10-11 and November 17-18. The Medieval fest will also feature musicians, jousts, handcrafted items, a costume contest, games, rides, and food and drink fit for a king.

  • Boats of Cardboard and Golfing for Art

    This month, your Sotherly host suggests two fun and family-friendly events for October. First up is the Cardboard Boat Race on October 13. Create your cardboard watercraft with a theme, and don’t forget that all-important team name! Or, join the spectators at the City of Hollywood Marina to watch the ingenious and avant-garde boats and their crews, and cheer them on to the finish and the awarding of the plastic trophy. Next, a day of golfing, fun, and the chance to meet 10-time PGA Tour winner Mark McCumber is on the agenda at the 10th Annual Golf for Art Fundraiser on October 20....

    The championship, par-70, Hollywood Beach Golf Club will be the setting for the fundraiser, which will benefit Hollywood’s Art and Culture Center. Participants will enjoy a Continental breakfast, and four beverage stations will be dispensing complimentary Bloody Marys and other vodka concoctions, along with soft drinks, Gatorade, and water. There will be an awards luncheon, and a live auction with fabulous prizes, drawings, and gift bags, as well as an “artsy” golf ball from students of the National Art Honor Society of South Broward High School.   • September Features Art, Movies, and Music

    It’s already September, but don’t panic - your Sotherly host offers several suggestions to help keep your summer fun vibe going. Check out the list below: First, -don’t forget about Funtastic Friday at the ArtsPark and the ArtsPark Movie Nights. This month’s movies include “Goodbye, Christopher Robin” on September 7, “Sing” on September 14, “D2: The Mighty Ducks” on September 21, and the original, 1984 “Ghostbusters” on September 28. Also, the ArtsPark free Solar Blast Summer Concert Series continues with a salute to tribute bands. First up is Chain Reaction, a tribute to Journey and Styx on September 8, and September 22 will feature the Beatles tribute band, Let it Be. Bring a blanket or beach chair and enjoy groovin’ on the lawn....

    Lastly, the 2018 Florida Biennial is opening on September 14 and will be showing through October 21. Including 64 works by 30 artists, this juried exhibit features work by Florida artists working in any medium. The show’s themes include ecological issues and multicultural identities, and this year’s edition also focuses on imagining a strong cultural climate as a part of the global economy. An opening reception will be held on September 14 from 6-9 p.m.

  • August Brings Ballet, Dual Roles, Purple Reign, and the Whimsical Glass Art of Borowski

    This August, your Sotherly host suggests the following fun and fabulous events. First, catch the XXIII International Ballet Festival of Miami: Contemporary Performance on August 12 at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Dance companies from Mexico, Italy, and the U.S. will perform in this eclectic contemporary offering. Next, be sure to catch the exhibit “Dual Roles” before it leaves the Art and Culture Center on August 19. The show focuses on the dual roles of artists who are also parents, as well as general perceptions about parenting in relation to artistic careers....

    Then, get ready to party like it’s 1999, when “Purple Reign,” the Prince Tribute Show, comes to the Hard Rock Seminole on August 25. This award-winning show features Jason Tenner as Prince, who recreates the vibrant energy of Prince in his prime. The show will also feature a tribute to Morris Day and the Time. Lastly, don’t miss “Fables and Fairy Tales: Borowski at Flamingo Gardens.” The show will be on display daily through September 3 and will feature over 70 glass works of art brilliantly evocative of the beloved creatures from our favorite fairy tales and fables.

  • A Month of Family-Friendly Fun

    This July, your Sotherly host suggests a month of food, fun, films, and fireworks. First, plan to picnic with us at ArtsPark on Monday, July 2 when over 20 different food trucks will be available; each one featuring an array of culinary delights. Next, on Wednesday, July 4, get ready for a day-long celebration of Independence Day, featuring fun, sun, sand, and music on the award-winning Blue Wave beach or Charnow Park’s splash pad. Party on the beach or lounge under an umbrella while listening to live entertainment. A dazzling offshore fireworks display will cap off the evening....

    Next, make plans to be at Funtastic Friday on July 6 for face-painting, games, bounce houses, and a DJ kicking out the jams. Afterward, pack up your lawn chairs and blankets and stroll on over to the ArtsPark Amphitheater for a screening of Walt Disney Productions 2002 sports drama film, “The Rookie.” The movie is based on the real-life story of Jim Morris, who had a brief career as a major-league baseball player.     Bright sunny days, beautiful white beaches, and prime Oceanside views – summer has officially begun here in Hollywood, and your Sotherly host has a few suggestions for some fun and fabulous events and activities this June. First, check out the June lineup at the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood, which includes Tyler Henry - The Hollywood Medium, Donny and Marie Osmond, Shake 3X, the Loop, the Jason Dumm Band, and Peat Moss and the Fertilizers. Next, join us on June 9 at Charnow Park for the March for the Ocean Celebration....

    In the spirit of positive community activism, marchers will include those from music, art, and environmental non-profits, and the march will proceed to the Marine Environmental Education Center and then back to Charnow. Lastly, take advantage of Historic Hollywood Walking Tours. These two self-guided tours of Hollywood Beach and the city’s downtown include the Bandshell, the Paddleball courts, Joseph W.   • This Month, It’s All About the Art

    For the month of May, your Sotherly host recommends three intertwined and impressive art installations that are currently showing through May 20. First, HABITAT, PLUSH, and ORIGIN are on display at the Art & Culture Center. HABITAT is made up of a variety of artist’s environments as installations that seeks to more fully scrutinize the role of women in intimate spaces. PLUSH is an acronym for and dedicated to Pleasurable, Lush, Utilitarian, Subjects of Humanity....

    Now in its second year, Laura Marsh, the Center’s curator, invited artists to create work that incorporated materials and objects that most of us associate with domesticity and the roles of women. ORIGIN is a solo show by multidisciplinary artist Sri Prabha who creates solid resin forms that challenge our sense of gravity. Additional participating artists include Pip Brant, Eurydice, Marina Font, Patricia Schnall-Gutierrez, Nick Mahshie, Rhonda Mitrani, Annie Blazejack, and Karen Rifas.   • The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade and a Brewery Tour

    This month, we invite you to celebrate the holiday in true Irish Style, and in keeping with the theme of the month, to tour a local brewery.     Calling all dog lovers! Be sure to catch the “Be Mine” Community Dog Show at the Stan Goldman “Hollywoof” Dog Park on February 10.     This month the ArtsPark at Young Circle is featuring four fabulously fun and family-friendly events for all ages. First, get ready for a celebration in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on January 12th. The kids will jump for joy in the bounce house and have a ball getting their faces painted.   • The 7th Annual Veterans Barbecue and an “Endangered” Exhibit

    Join us this month for two terrific events.   • Hit Hollywood Beach and the Boardwalk

    September is autumn’s herald, and while residents of other parts of the country are unpacking sweaters and jackets, Floridians are still experiencing the glorious warmth of the season. Here, September means “business as usual” at the beach. Selected as one of the "Best Beaches for Families" in Florida by Fodor's Travel Guide, the Hollywood Beach is the sole Broward and Miami-Dade beach to be recognized for both its amenities and its sand quality....

    The folks here are proud of their beach, and many of them participate in the monthly “Beach Sweep Clean-Up held on the second Saturday of every month. On Saturday, September 9th, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., volunteers will converge on Charnow Park, don gloves, pick up garbage bags, and hit the beach to collect litter and cigarette butts.   • A Sotherly Host Recommends: Arts in August

    This August, visitors to Hollywood and guests of the Hyde Resort can take advantage of a variety of exhibits, art camps, and performances for the entire family at the Arts and Culture Center. “In Service/Out of Service,” a performance art exhibit by David Rohn will be performed through August 20th. Rohn’s performance starkly emphasizes the plights of those who work in service, as it empathizes with those who have been displaced and/or marginalized. Subjects include a waitress, a housekeeper, a security guard, and a car mechanic....

    Also showing through August 20th is Charley Friedman’s “Moist Things” “Science Project” exhibit. This fun display seeks to challenge to how we view ordinary objects, and features spinning beach balls, sponges, and kiddie pools. Offered through August 18, the Summer Arts Camp features a variety of programs featuring performing arts, music, visual arts, and interdisciplinary programs for every interest and skill level. Children and teens gain skill and confidence while preparing for public performances and exhibitions, such as the 2016 performance of “Seussical Jr.”  Programs offered include Littlest Actors and Artists for 4-6-year-olds, Young Actors and Artists for 6-12-year-olds, and Broadway Actors, an intensive performance program for ages 8-18.

  • It's Raining Marshmallows

    Look for sunny skies and raining marshmallows on Saturday, April 8th, when the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts hosts the Spring Marshmallow Drop at the Boulevard Heights Community Center in West Hollywood. ...

    This family-friendly event will include an egg hunt, a visit from the Easter Bunny, a bounce house, arts and crafts, and the dropping of over 30,000 marshmallows from a helicopter. The fun begins at 2:00 p.m., and the drop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

    Children aged 3-12 are invited to participate and all are asked to bring their own bags, baskets, and other containers to collect eggs and marshmallows. Everyone who participates will win a bag of candy, and participants will also be eligible for other prizes of gift bags and bicycles. A Toddler Zone has also been added this year, with fun and games for those who are two years old and younger.

    A fantastic array of original art by 63 Florida artists will be on display from January 21st - March 5th at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center. This year’s Biennial will offer 77 works in assorted mediums, all hand-picked by juror Katherine Pill. Ms. Pill is the curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, and the previous Assistant Curator at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Pill made her selections from over 391 artist’s submissions in such media as sculpture, paintings, prints, computer-generated images, video, performance, and site-specific installations.
