A Sotherly Host Recommends: Arts in August

August 07, 2017

This August, visitors to Hollywood and guests of the Hyde Resort can take advantage of a variety of exhibits, art camps, and performances for the entire family at the Arts and Culture Center. “In Service/Out of Service,” a performance art exhibit by David Rohn will be performed through August 20th. Rohn’s performance starkly emphasizes the plights of those who work in service, as it empathizes with those who have been displaced and/or marginalized. Subjects include a waitress, a housekeeper, a security guard, and a car mechanic.

Also showing through August 20th is Charley Friedman’s “Moist Things” “Science Project” exhibit. This fun display seeks to challenge to how we view ordinary objects, and features spinning beach balls, sponges, and kiddie pools. Offered through August 18, the Summer Arts Camp features a variety of programs featuring performing arts, music, visual arts, and interdisciplinary programs for every interest and skill level. Children and teens gain skill and confidence while preparing for public performances and exhibitions, such as the 2016 performance of “Seussical Jr.”  Programs offered include Littlest Actors and Artists for 4-6-year-olds, Young Actors and Artists for 6-12-year-olds, and Broadway Actors, an intensive performance program for ages 8-18.
